RUSSIA INVADES FINLAND
AIR BATTLE ERUPTS OVER NORWAY AS RUSSIAN JETS SHOT DOWN
OSLO - A fierce air battle erupted over Norway as its air force shot down two Russian Su-27 "Flanker" fighter jets that allegedly violated Norwegian airspace. In the intense exchange, one Norwegian F-16 was also downed, significantly escalating the conflict in the region following Russia's invasion of Finland.
The incident occurred amid a broader Russian cruise missile offensive against Finland, with 38 missiles launched from Russian Northern Fleet ships. All of the missiles intentionally flew through Norwegian airspace on their way to Finnish targets. Norwegian air defense systems successfully intercepted 25 of these missiles, though three crashed into Norwegian territory near the Finnish border.
Norwegian Foreign Minister Henrik Nilsen condemned the aggressive actions, stating, “Russia’s deliberate incursions into our airspace and missile attacks are flagrant violations of international law and pose a direct threat to our national security. We are coordinating closely with our NATO Allies and strongly condemn these hostile actions.”
In light of these provocations, Norway has urgently called on NATO for a military response. “Given the severity of these breaches, we urge NATO to take decisive military action to deter further aggression and ensure the security of the alliance,” Nilsen added. As tensions mount, the intentions behind Russia’s actions in Norway remain unclear. The deliberate routing of cruise missiles through Norwegian airspace and the penetration by Russian fighter jets raise questions about whether these are mere provocations or part of a broader strategic move against Norway itself. The Norwegian government has intensified its intelligence efforts to understand Moscow's motives.
In response to the escalating situation, the Norwegian Defense Ministry confirmed a large-scale military mobilization. Norwegian F-16 jets have been deployed from local air bases for enhanced surveillance and combat operations, with the entire Norwegian Air Force placed on heightened alert.
“Teams from the Ministry of Defense are conducting urgent investigations to locate and assess debris that may have fallen on Norwegian soil due to the missile attacks,” the ministry stated.
