Virtual CVW-17 Operations Concept

The Virtual CVW-17 Operations Concept has been meticulously crafted by members with extensive careers in Naval Aviation, aiming to deliver an authentic simulation of real-world carrier air wing training and operations. Our open-world training environments are designed with a high degree of customization, enabling flight leads to tailor threats and scenarios to meet specific training objectives. This building-block approach allows members to develop each skill in a structured, part-task manner, gradually integrating these skills into full-scale air wing operations. When deployed, we operate in dynamic, open-world campaigns that demand creativity, coordination, and skill to achieve theater objectives.

Virtual CVW-17’s Operations Concept stands out within the DCS community. Rather than focusing on a single major mission every week, we operate in accordance with the Fleet Response Training Plan (FRTP). This structured training plan takes our air wing squadrons through a progressive series of training phases. It offers members a genuine experience of what it’s like to be part of a U.S. Navy fighter squadron, starting with smaller, focused training missions under the guidance of flight leads, and gradually escalating in complexity until the entire air wing is executing large-scale, integrated strike missions. When our air wing is embarked on the carrier for underway phases like TSTA and C2X, we follow the air plan—the ship’s flight schedule—which governs launches and recoveries, allowing us to fully experience the intensity and coordination of cyclic operations.

In addition to our FRTP-driven operations, Virtual CVW-17 hosts “sim-combat” missions approximately twice a month. These missions fall outside the regular training continuum and offer members a chance to break from the structured training cycle and enjoy challenging, integrated operations together. These complex missions require time and expertise to develop, and the Wing is always eager to welcome more mission builders who can contribute to creating these engaging and demanding scenarios.

So, what does this Operations Concept mean for new members? It means that Virtual CVW-17 is ideally suited for DCS pilots who are eager to deepen their understanding and improve their ability to execute realistic tactics in a team-oriented environment. We are a great fit for those who wish to learn how to plan and lead authentic training and combat missions within the DCS platform. However, does this mean new members need to be ready to take on these leading roles immediately? Absolutely not!

Mission planning and leadership involve processing mission tasking orders, analyzing intelligence, using tools like Combat Flite to develop strike routes, creating TACADMIN cards with flight-specific details, and for Large Force Strike missions, preparing a comprehensive PowerPoint Mass Brief for the entire strike package. No one is expected to tackle this solo from the start. Experienced flight leads are there to guide and mentor those who are learning. However, the expectation is that all Virtual CVW-17 pilots will be motivated to learn, master, and eventually lead within the Wing. Much like in the real world, Virtual CVW-17 employs a qualification program known as the Strike Fighter Weapons and Tactics (SFWT or “swiftee”) program. This program has five levels, and all pilots in Virtual CVW-17 are expected to progress to Level IV, which qualifies them as Combat Division Leads. Ample time is provided to earn these qualifications - what’s essential is the desire to grow.

At its core, Virtual CVW-17 is built on a culture-first mindset. While tactical excellence is crucial and we constantly strive to improve, it is the PEOPLE who truly make this Wing what it is. Ultimately, we recognize that this is a video game (GASP!) and a hobby - none of us can dedicate full-time effort to this! That’s why it’s so important for members to have a desire to learn, master skills, and eventually contribute by planning and leading flights and missions, all while maintaining a mature and fun-loving attitude toward our shared hobby.

Virtual CVW-17 is a community for Naval Aviation enthusiasts who are motivated to learn and contribute. We provide an authentic representation of life in a Naval Aviation squadron, where earning qualifications and becoming a flight leader - rather than just a competent wingman - is part of the true Naval Aviation experience!
