USS George Washington Carrier Strike Group Departs for the Deployment to the Norwegian Sea.

VIRGINIA -- The U.S. Navy’s aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73) and its strike group departed Commander, United States Fleet Forces Command (CUSFFC) on July 10th, heading towards the Norwegian Sea amidst rising tensions with Russia.

During this at-sea period, George Washington, its strike group ships, the embarked Carrier Air Wing 17, and Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 15 staffs, are expected to collaborate with allies and partners, promote adherence to a rules-based international order, and maintain presence and flexibility to meet the needs of the U.S. Department of Defense.

George Washington successfully completed its work-ups in preparation for deployment on July 1st.

The USS George Washington Carrier Strike Group is relieving the USS Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group, which includes Carrier Air Wing 8, after their six-month deployment in the region.

In Carrier Air Wing 17, VF-103 Jolly Rogers, VFA-34 Blue Blasters, VFA-81 Sunliners, VFA-83 Rampagers, VAQ-132 Scorpions, VS-30 Diamondcutters, VAW-125 Tigertails, VRC-40 Rawhides, and HS-15 Red Lions will be deployed.
